Our Guilds and Organizations

 Acolytes
serve at church services as torch bearers, banner bearers, and crucifers. Acolytes assist in preparing the Altar and assist the Priest in many ways throughout the service. Training is available for members 10 years of age and older.

 Calvary Seniors
is an organization composed of members who are fifty years of age or older. Members of this organization share fellowship, sponsor educational and informative sessions, and are active participants in the Diocesan Senior Ministries Program.

 Alms Committee
 (currently on hiatis)
accepts donations of canned and packaged foods, clothing, and some household items, which are given to those who have a need. When possible, a small donation for the item is received. Persons requesting financial assistance are referred to the Priest. To the extent possible, when assistance cannot be provided by the church persons in need of help are directed to other facilities.

 Daughters and Sons of Dorcas
consist of Calvary members and friends who quilt, teach the art of quilting, and do other handicraft work with students and adult groups.

 Altar Guild
members work each week to keep the altar properly vested at all times. And keeping everything pertaining to the altar clean. The Altar Guild is responsible for ordering supplies and flowers and for floral arrangements within the church.

The Order of the  Daughters of the King, Lydia Chapter
is an order of lay women of the Episcopal Church, who undertake a rule of life incorporating prayer and service. Members are not permitted to sponsor fund-raising activities. All activities, such as visiting the sick and shut-in, adopting a unit of the Washington Center for the Aging, distributing Christmas gifts, and making sacrificial offerings to the church are financed by individual members.

 Birthday Guilds
were organized to bring all members into an active parish service organization. Each guild plans a sacrificial offering project. During a specific month this offering is presented to the church at a corporate communion of the guild.

 Evangelism Committee*
focuses on projects which perpetuate the “good news” of the redemption of the world through Jesus Christ. Activities include an audio tape ministry, Bible study, evangelism workshops, neighborhood visitations, and the welcoming of newcomers and visitors. The entire congregation is involved to some degree in evangelism.

The Order of the Brotherhood of St. Andrews
is a religious order for men. Its members undertake a lifelong program of prayer, service, and evangelism.

 Hospitality Committee*
works under the direction of the Priest and Parish Council to plan hospitality and fellowship events for the entire parish on a regular basis, as well as for special occasions.

 Calvary Episcopal Church Women
 and Girls

Formerly known as the Women of Calvary, has as its purpose that of supporting all guilds and organizations. The membership is comprised of all women of Calvary. The Church Periodical Club, time Memorial Scholarship Sunday, and the limited Thank Offering are the major activities sponsored by the Calvary Episcopal Church Women.

 Lay Readers Guild
members are recommended by the Priest and licensed by the Bishop to assist the Priest in administering the Holy Eucharist on Sundays. They serve as readers, crucifers, and chalicists at healing services and funerals. They visit the sick and shut-ins to provide anointing services and Holy Communion.

 Calvary Players
is an organized group of persons of all ages who are interested in drama. Membership in this organization requires no expertise, our only aim, is an interest in acting and in producing plays. The purpose of the players is to enhance cultural enrichment within the parish and the community and to raise money for needed projects within the church.

 Music*
Calvary has three choirs; The Parish Choir, Calvary Gospel, and the volunteer choir. Efforts are being made to reestablish the Children’s Choir. In addition to providing music for the services of worship, the choirs are involved in outreach activities such as singing at nursing homes and housing for senior citizens housing complexes, participating with other choirs in the diocese to sing on special occasions, and coordinating and sponsoring the presentation of other choirs and singing groups at Calvary. Our philosophy is all music in praise.

 The Men of Calvary
an organization open to all male members of time parish. The organization offers fel¬lowship and education through monthly meetings to which guest speakers are invited from the membership their families, and, their friends. The Men also sponsor the annual Evensong Vespers and numerous fund-raising activities. Photos

 The Calvary Scholarship Committee
awards scholarships of one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) to each graduating senior who is enrolling in a college or university of his/her choice. A two hundred and fifty dollar ($250.00) book grant is a follow-up award to those who continue their education. Funds are generated through various fund-raising activities and from donations.

 Nominating Committee
is elected at each Annual Meeting to serve during the following church year. A chairperson and three members, elected from each service are responsible for devising a slate of eligible members for election to the Vestry and delegates to the Diocesan Convention. Election takes place at the Annual meeting.

 Spiritual Renewal Group
is committed to Bible study, intercessory prayer, worship, and in reach and outreach services. They meet regularly every Monday evening.

 Parish Council
provides a link between the Vestry, Parish Organizations and the parishioners. It coordinates requests for change, upgrading of Parish procedures and parish-wide fundraising activities.

 Sunday School
meets every Sunday at 11:00 a.m. except the fifth Sunday or when there is only one service. Time I Urban Ministry, Inc., Curriculum, supplemented by other materials, is its main teaching tool.

 St. Catherine Guild
Provides prayer calendars for the sick and shut-in Outreach activities include donating personal care items to needy organizations and groups.

 Verger Guild
members assist time worshippers to find seats, receive and present the offering to the acolytes, present the wine and bread offering to the Lay Eucharist Ministers, and direct time worshipers to the altar to receive communion.

 St. Martha Guild
assists with a number of parish needs It also contributes to the Stork’s Nest, and out-reach program of Zeta Phi Beta, Inc. and to the Cathedral Flower Mart.

 The Youth Committee
welcomes all youth from seventh grade through high school. It develops programs such as Christian retreats for youth, fellowship and outreach activities twenty youth are currently members of the Union of Black Episcopalians
.

 St. Monica Guild
is the first hospitality group to be established at Calvary Episcopal Church. The guild conducts fund-raising activities and contributes money and needed articles to the Hospital for Sick Children, the House of Ruth, the Episcopal Center for Children, and the library of Banneker High School.
